Tu B'Shuvat the New Year of Trees
Tu B'Shuvat is the 15th day of the month of Shuvat on the Jewish calendar. On the Gregorian calendar this date falls anywhere in late January or early February.It is the day in Israel that marks the beginning of the year for trees when the earliest buds begin their fruit bearing cycle.
This past year that day was January 31, 2018. A rare double full moon month! and....
a total eclipse of the moon!
Legally Tu B'Shevat relates to the tithing practices of produce and is celebrated by eating fruit praised in the Torah of the abundance of the Holy Land. Namely, grapes, figs, pomegranates, olives and dates. A lesson for analogy in honor of this day is in Deuteronomy 20:19.
Judging of Trees
As Rosh Hoshanah, the new year, marks a time of judgement with the blowing of trumpets, so too is this New Year of Trees marked in a similar time of fruit bearing.A new testament parable references judgment of fruit bearing of a Fig tree to 4 years.
Luke 13 says:
6 He spake also this parable; A certain man had a fig tree planted in his vineyard; and he came and sought fruit thereon*, and found none. 7 Then said he unto the dresser of his vineyard, Behold, these three years I come seeking fruit on this fig tree, and find none: cut it down; why* cumbereth it the ground? 8 And he answering said unto him, Lord, let it alone this year also, till I shall dig about it, and dung* it: 9 And if it bear fruit, well: and if not, then after that* thou shalt cut it down.
That is 4 years for the tree to bear fruit.
At 3 years is given help and a warning before 4 years.
Then after 4 years the Fig Tree is cut down!
Interesting fact is that there are 2 consecutive years both 2018 and 2019 in which this holiday falls on the dates of Lunar Eclipses known as Blood Moons, with another in the midyear July 2018.
This marks the 7th Blood Moon since the Tetrad of 2014 and 2015.
